Golden Week, those 10 golden holidays, already seems very long ago, doesn’t it? I know that many of you were busy with club activities, homework, or other study, but I hope that you also had a chance to do something else that you really enjoy. On Monday this week I went to Asuka with my younger son. I’m sure you know that Asuka is famous for its long history. About 1,400 years ago the nation of Japan, or ‘Nippon’ was born in Asuka. The highlight of my day was going inside the ancient “Ishibutai Kofun”. There is nothing inside now, but it was absolutely amazing to stand there, touch the huge rocks, listen to the local guides telling us about its history, and think about how people were able to make this huge burial chamber so long ago. There are many other wonderful places to visit in Asuka, too, but I don’t have time to tell you about them all. My message to you this morning is simple. It is very easy for us to get information about the world without leaving our homes. Technology at our fingertips has made our lives easier in so many ways. However, I really believe that the most interesting things we can learn, the most memorable experiences that we can have, happen when we go and see things with our own eyes, touch things with our own hands, meet and speak with people face to face. You don’t have to go far – for example Asuka is just two hours from here by car. So, when you have some time, go and have fun discovering something new about our beautiful world. It will surely be worth it.
