第16回津市長杯セントヨゼフ英語スピーチコンテストが、本校にて開催されました。当日は多くの児童・生徒にとって夏休み最終日でしたが、猛暑の中、県内外より小学校37校から57名（4〜6年生）、中学校18校から27名の参加がありました。
小学生の部では、アメリカの作家アーノルド・ローベルによる『がまくんとかえるくん』シリーズの「クッキー」および「はる」の2作品を題材に暗唱が行われました。登場人物の心情を豊かに表現し、物語を生き生きと伝える発表に、会場の聴衆も引き込まれました。
午後の中学生の部では、「過去から学べること」または「私のロールモデル」というテーマで、自作スピーチが披露されました。歴史や自身の体験を通して学んだこと、あるいは人生に大きな影響を与えた人物について熱意をもって語る姿に、審査員および聴衆は深い感銘を受けました。
津市の前葉泰幸市長様には小学生の部決勝にご臨席いただき、日本語と英語の両方で励ましのお言葉を頂戴しました。また、両部門の審査委員長を務めてくださった上智大学言語教育研究センター今井康博准教授、ならびに本コンテストを長年ご支援くださっている津市教育委員会を代表して小林正様、山岡美奈子様に深く感謝申し上げます。さらに、亀山市教育委員会、中日新聞社、カシオ計算機株式会社、日本英語検定協会、南山大学の皆様にも引き続きご後援を賜りましたことに厚く御礼申し上げます。
本校では、多くの若い世代が英語を用いて積極的に表現する姿に触れることを大きな喜びとしております。ご家族の皆様、指導にあたられた先生方、関係者の皆様のご支援・ご協力に心より感謝申し上げます。来年度も多数のご参加を心よりお待ち申し上げます。

The 16th Saint Joseph English Speech Contest for the Mayor’s Cup was held at the school on what was, for most participants, the last day of the summer vacation. Despite this, no fewer than 57 Grade 4~6 elementary school students, representing 37 different schools, and 27 junior high school students, representing 18 different schools, traveled to Saint Joseph from around Mie Prefecture and beyond on a tremendously hot day. Speakers in the Elementary School Division recited one of two short texts based on the stories ‘Cookies’ and ‘Spring’ in the Frog and Toad series written by American author Arnold Lobel. In a very keenly contested event, it was a pleasure to watch the speakers bring the stories to life through their depictions of the main characters in the stories. In the afternoon, junior high school participants presented self-written speeches on one of the themes ‘What we can learn from the past’ or ‘My role model’. The judges and audience were impressed by the depth of feeling demonstrated by the speakers as they expressed their ideas about lessons to be learned from episodes in history or their own personal experiences, or shared some very personal feelings about people who have had a profound impact on their lives.
Mr. Maeba Yasuyuki, mayor of Tsu City, demonstrated his continuing support of our contest by attending the Final of the Elementary School Division, and delighted everyone with his comments in both Japanese and English. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Professor Imai Yasuhiro from Sophia University for fulfilling the duties of Head Judge in both divisions, and to Mr. Kobayashi Tadashi and Ms. Yamaoka Minako, representing one of the key supporters of the speech contest, the Tsu City Municipal Board of Education. Thanks also go to the Kameyama Municipal Board of Education, the Chunichi Shimbun, Casio Computer Ltd, the Eiken Foundation of Japan, and Nanzan University for their continuing sponsorship.
It is always a great pleasure to host so many young people and to witness their enthusiasm to use English and to perform or present in front of so many people. Thank you to family members, teachers and instructors for their assistance and support. We are already looking forward to hosting many of you again next year!
