3月20日、2～5年生の生徒19名が、カナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州のバンクーバーおよびその周辺への10日間の海外研修プログラムのために日本を出発しました。長時間のフライトの後、一行はバンクーバーに到着し、緊張と興奮が入り混じる中、9泊にわたって滞在する現地のホストファミリーと初対面しました。
週末はそれぞれのホストファミリーと過ごして、平日には生徒が英語を通してカナダ文化を学ぶ多彩なアクティビティに取り組みました。現地の高校生たちが「バディ」としてプログラムに参加し、英語のスキルを実践的に高めるだけでなく、新たな友情を育む機会にもなりました。
天候がやや雨模様だったにもかかわらず、参加者たちはブリティッシュコロンビア大学やバンクーバーのガスタウン、スタンレーパーク、さらにはカナダとアメリカの国境にあるピースアーチ公園や近郊のホワイトロックの町を訪れるなど、さまざまなエクスカーションを楽しみました。また、「フライオーバー・カナダ」でのバーチャル体験ツアーに参加したり、美味しいケーキとサンドイッチでのアフタヌーンティーも堪能したりしました。
バディと5ピンボウリングや、ドリームキャッチャー作り、伝統的なダンスへの参加を通してファースト・ネーションズの文化について学ぶこともできました。
多くの参加者にとって初めての海外旅行となるこのツアーでは、スーパーマーケットの規模や朝食の内容、バンクーバーに暮らす人々の多様性など、驚きの連続でした。出会った人々の温かいもてなしと親切さに皆が感動し、「またこの美しい国を訪れたい！」と次の機会を楽しみにしている様子でした。
On March 20, 19 students from Grades 2~5 left Japan for a 10-day study tour in and around Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. After a lengthy flight, the group arrived in Vancouver and, full of nervous excitement, met the local families who would be hosting them for the following nine nights.
In addition to spending an entire weekend with their respective host families, the study tour participants had a full program of activities focused on learning about Canadian culture through the medium of English. A group of local high school students joined the group as ‘buddies’ for the duration of the trip, giving everyone the opportunity not only to practice and improve their English skills but also form new friendships at the same time.
Despite some damp weather, everyone enjoyed excursions to the University of British Columbia, Gastown and Stanley Park in Vancouver, as well as a visit to the Peace Arch Park border between Canada and the USA and the nearby town of White Rock. There was also a chance for everyone to ride the amazing virtual tour at ‘Flyover Canada’ and to enjoy afternoon tea of sandwiches with delicious cakes!
Cultural events with the buddies included 5-pin bowling and the opportunity to learn about First Nations’ heritage by making dreamcatchers and taking part in a traditional dance.
Being the first time for many of the participants to travel overseas, the trip was full of surprises, such as the size of the supermarkets, what people eat for breakfast, and the incredible diversity of the Vancouver residents. Everyone was overwhelmed by the hospitality and kindness of the people they encountered and said that they are looking forward to the next chance they have to visit this beautiful country!
